Bar Options

As a rule of thumb, usually one bar is needed for every 100 people. But more may be necessary if all guests are arriving at the same time on buses or shuttles. You will need to decide whether to offer a cash bar (guests pay for their own drinks) or host bar (you foot the bill). Some people do a combination of both, at different times of the night.

Other decisions you will need to make are whether to pour premium or house brands. And whether your beer will be microbrews or domestic. Please note that keg beer is offered at the Fort Snelling Club. As for wine, people often serve a less expensive varietal at the bar and upgrade to a higher quality vintage for dinner service. You'll also need to make a specific decision about cordials; if you have a hosted bar, that may increase your bar total substantially. The same with shots. So what will all this cost? There are many ways to provide beverages to your guests, depending on your budget. We've thought through a few possible scenarios so you can begin to get a sense of what the options might cost.

Scenario I
First hour hosted bar, house brands
Wine with Dinner
Cash Bar after dinner (guests pay for own drinks). Hosted tab for bridal party and parents-variable

Scenario II
Champagne and sparkling apple cider for the first hour
Cash Bar the rest of the evening. Wine with Dinner

Scenario III
Host beer, wine, and sodas all evening
Wine with Dinner

Scenario IV
Host bar all evening
Wine with Dinner

Scenario V
Cash Bar all evening
Wine with Dinner

Food Service Options

The decision to do a plated dinner or buffet is a complex one.

Plated dinners are considered more formal, and are nice because your guests are served by waitstaff and there's no waiting in line. In general, your guests get the feeling of being served.

The final quantity of the entrée must be given to your Event Planner 10 days prior to the event.

Buffet dinners: The advantage of dinner buffets is that your guests can have as much or as little food items as they wish. There is no portion control. They also have a variety of food to select from. The disadvantage is that guests will need to be in line for the food buffet and dinner service takes slightly longer.

A heavy hors d' oeuvre buffet is a non-traditional option, but one worth considering. Tables are arranged in scattered cabaret seating, with no head table or formal sit down area. The scene is very casual, with no structure to the toasts or program, and promotes a lot of mingling and conversation. The food selections can be much more adventurous. This is a great option if you want to try something different.

Wine with Dinner

You can usually estimate about 1.5 glasses per person. And you get approximately 5 glasses of wine per bottle. Guests are offered a choice of red and white wine (your selection), and you are billed by the bottle. By serving at the entrée service only, you can save some money.

Dessert & Coffee

A dessert buffet is optional, and can be set up later in the evening or right after dinner. You can select from a delectable combination of miniature sweets, full size tortes and fresh fruit platters, but the wedding cake is traditional.

Another nice touch is a late night coffee station—especially for guests needing to drive home that evening. Fancy coffee stations are a hit, and usually include whipped cream, chocolate shavings, orange rind, brown sugar, raw sugar and cinnamon sticks.

Linens/Tables

White tablecloths and a selection of colored napkins are included at at a nominal fee.

Beverage napkins are always provided by the Fort Snelling Club—unless you would like to supply your own printed ones. They are used for beverages and hors d' oeuvres, as well as for the bar.

No other centerpieces or props are provided, but we welcome your imaginative creations.
